Breaking New Ground

“I’m the first Indian Air India has ever hired locally in Japan (at the Tokyo office of India’s state-owned carrier). My manager, who thought it was strange no Indians were working for an Indian company in Japan, really wanted to have one. So one day she said, `why don’t we bring in an Indian to the team?’ and I became the first to be hired in all 60 years they’ve been operating here. There’s a lot of added pressure though–high expectations on my performance and my deep knowledge about my home country to boot. But it’s a great opportunity to be a bridge between India and Japan. Up until now it’s only Indian expats who get to come here for work, so I’m thrilled to make history.”
